11.30am – 1.00pm with Phillipa Candy
Collaborative Performance Skills

The majority of professional music-making activity involves collaborating with fellow musicians, which is why collaborative skills are a must for every pianist. Phillipa Candy has 40 years of experience working as a professional pianist, educator, accompanist, vocal coach, and repetiteur and will draw upon her extensive knowledge in her informative lecture-demonstration offering insights into the unique artform of collaborative piano.

2.00 – 3.15pm with Katrina Rivera
Reducing Music Performance Anxiety through one-to-one pedagogy

This interactive session with educator and researcher Katrina Rivera will give an overview of current understanding and practice in music performance anxiety (MPA) research and will allow teachers to share and expand their own set of practical strategies for reducing and preventing MPA in their students. Participants will update their understanding of current academic research on the symptoms, causes, incidence and treatment of MPA, extend their current list of practical strategies to reduce MPA, and consider ways in which one-to-one pedagogy can be used to reduce and prevent MPA

Studio Policies: The business of running your business

Writing and enforcing studio policy is a tricky business, and one that most of us wish we could avoid! However, a strong business policy is vital when it comes to looking after yourself and running a successful and sustainable studio. Sally Greenaway is a gifted composer, pianist and educator with a wealth of experience navigating the business side of a career in the creative arts and will provide practical and relevant advice for keeping your studio running smoothly. Topics will include make-up lessons, fee structures, paying yourself superannuation, and tips for encouraging students to purchase a quality instrument for their home.
