DEBUSSY LECTURE-DEMONSTRATION

Mike Lee, lecturer and head of keyboard at the ANU School of Music, will present a lecture-demonstration titled “Three Debussy Preludes, Book I”. This would be an excellent educational opportunity for teachers and for students at the intermediate level and above.

Mike writes, “in this lecture-demonstration I explore three preludes from Book I— Voiles, La Cathédrale Engloutie, and Des Pas Sur La Neige—that are part of the 2018 AMEB syllabus. By way of exploring these works’ individual structural and expressive features, I draw attention to recurring issues in the interpretation of Debussy’s piano music. The lecture concludes with a close reading and performance of Des Pas Sur La Neige on the ANU’s 1911 Blüthner, an instrument that closely resembles Debussy’s own much favoured 1904 Blüthner: cross-strung with Blüthner’s patented “aliquot” resonating strings in the treble range”.
