Dr Neeman writes, “I will be sharing insights from my favourite book on pedaling: The pianist’s guide to pedaling by Joseph Banowetz. This book delves into the huge range of possible techniques and pedaling styles that are possible on a modern piano, demonstrated in reference to familiar passages in the professional pianists’ repertoire. In this lecture I will apply Banowetz’s pedaling philosophies to student AMEB pieces, showing how to develop an ear for pedaling and skills for pedal problem solving. Works considered are Scherzo & Trio from Beethoven Sonata in A major, Op. 2/2 (Grade 5), Chopin Nocturne in F minor, Op. 55/1 (Grade 7), Brahms Intermezzo in B flat major, Op. 76/4 (Grade 7), and Debussy Piéce pour le vêtement du blessé (Grade 6).”
